What should I do to prevent and treat my baldness? PART II
We continue talking about the most frequently used treatments in the prevention and management of baldness. In the first part of this blog we talked about cosmeceutical and nutraceutical treatments
In this second part we will continue with two other very useful therapies for the management of alopecia:
- Photobiostimulation
- Cellular Biostimulation
1) Photobiostimulation or Lower Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)
In 2007, the FDA of the United States of America approved Lower Level Laser Therapy as a treatment for a mild or moderate pattern hair loss. The FDA approved it since several studies showed that its frequent use promoted faster hair growth and it partially reversed alopecia patterns. From a cellular level, it works in the mitochondria, improving the metabolism and promoting a better use of cellular energy. Its also useful for hair transplant postoperative care because it reduces inflammation, diminishes cellular damage and aids the scarring process. Its use along with hair transplantation improves cosmetic results, as it not only improves the growth of the transplanted hairs, but additionally it improves the health and volume of hair affected by the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT)
The efficiency of the LASER therapy is directly proportional to the amount of energy emitted to the scalp by the device used. Therefore, it is better to use a cap with multiple diodes that act for several minutes on a specific spot, than a brush with only a few diodes moving throughout the scalp.

2) CELLULAR BIOSTIMULATION:
Consists of injecting chemicals or cellular substances that modify the environment into the intervened tissues, producing anti-inflammatory effects, promoting cellular regeneration, increasing the production of blood vessels and helping repair or produce collagen, elastin and, in some cases, new tissue. All of these procedures are being exhaustively researched. In some cases, this leads to spectacular, discrete or even null results and improvements.
There are four options among the treatments for cellular biostimulation: a. Capillary Mesotherapy; b. Platet-rich plasma (PRP); c. Biostimulation with scalp cells and d. stem cells
- Capillary mesotherapy: Consists of superficially injecting small quantities of medication into the scalp, that halt hair loss and help recover some of the lost capillary volume. Among the substance injected we have cocktails from a variety of the following elements: Minoxidil, Finasteride, Dutasteride, Panthenol, polypeptides. This treatment should be used once every week, and its constant use will gradually improve your hair because it attacks the causes of the problem.
- Platet-rich plasma(PRP): It consists of extracting blood and subsequently processing it in the laboratory. Here, they separate one of its components -the platelets- and then inject them into the scalp. These platelets are full of growth factors that, when coming into contact with the cells of the hair bulb, promote the neo formation of blood vessels and the repair of weakened follicles. Depending on how serious the case is, this treatment is done every one or two months, until the illness is stabilized. Then, it will be applied every three to six months for maintenance.
- Biostimulation with scalp cells: The tissue with the greatest amount of stem cells per gram of tissue is the scalp. The biostimulation with scalp cells consists of taking a small portion of the patient's scalp and, by means of a patented device (regeneraR), separating the stem cells from the removed tissue. This, will be then reinjected into the area that needs to be regenerated and into ill tissues. Patients who undergo this procedure must have some hair around the area they will treat, which will work as a matrix to generate new hair follicles.
- Stem Cells: During the gestation process in the womb, most cells in the body specialize in the formation of specific tissues. Yet, millions of cells end up without a defined state or job, which means they can potentially become a cell for anything necessary. These are known as stem cells. Fat is the best source to obtain stem cells. Hence, it is necessary to undergo a small liposuction procedure under local anesthesia, in order to send the fat to the laboratory where it is processed and where stem cells are extracted for the injections. This is the most common method nowadays. Yet, further research is being done.
