What’s a Fox Test and Why Is it Important?

March 29, 2024

Current technology and procedures related to hair transplants have made significant advancements, benefiting many men and women each year with outstanding results. However, not everyone is a good candidate for follicular unit excision (FUE) and re-transplantation. The Fox test is one of the methods used to identify potential contraindications or problems that may make other options more suitable for you.

The Fox test is especially important for patients with curly hair, particularly those with natural African American textures, due to the unique shape of the hair follicles in this type of hair. This test helps experts determine if the transplanted hair will survive and thrive in the recipient area.

What Is the Fox Test?

When you first make an appointment to discuss the possibility of getting your hair transplanted an expert at our Bogota or Medellin location, expect to answer a lot of questions about your general health, concerns, and expectations. Even though this type of extraction and transplantation is not incredibly invasive, it is still important to check overall health and for any potential hair transplant contraindications. Under safe and sterile conditions, multiple hair follicles are removed from your head. If you are African American or have similarly curled hair, expect this to be a regular part of the process. Some Caucasian, Asian, or other ethnic group patients will also need to complete the Fox test. The total number removed may be from a few dozen up to 100 grafts. They first test to see if it is easy enough to remove the follicle without damaging scalp to an undue degree. Technicians then perform a biopsy to investigate the follicle carefully and make sure it is intact, strong enough for transplant, and overall suitable for the FUE procedure.

Why the Fox Test Matters?

The Fox test is crucial in ensuring that your hair follicles are suitable for extraction during a hair transplant procedure. If follicles from the donor area cannot be safely and effectively removed, it becomes challenging to fill in sparse areas adequately. Surgeons assess several factors during the Fox test, including the complete release of the follicle anchor system, proper alignment of the follicle with the scalp skin, and the ease of extraction process.

The success of follicular unit excision and transplantation relies heavily on obtaining high-quality grafts. This maximizes the likelihood of their thriving in their new location on your scalp. Failing the Fox test doesn’t mean all hope is lost; alternative options may still exist to achieve the lush and healthy head of hair you desire.

Other Hair Transplant Contraindications

Although the modern hair transplant process has come a long way and is the right choice for many people, there are still those who are unable to take advantage of FUE transplantation. Before you book a flight to our Colombia hair restoration institutes in Bogotá or Medellin, it is important to understand if you have any hair transplant contraindications. They may include:

  • Various types of alopecia
  • Uncontrolled blood pressure issues
  • Bleeding or healing disorders
  • Excessive scalp scar tissue or other damage
  • Unreasonable expectations
